let's listen to john mccain talking about immigration. here it is. >> the president, obviously has some thoughts about immigration reform which he drafted and guided his agencies to comment on. if the president proposes legislation, do you think it will fail? >> of course. of course it will. that is why we are working together, republicans and democrats, by the way he had no communications with the congress. i believe we are making progress in a bipartisan basis. >> does this sound like republicans saying no for any of the president's proposals? >> no. >> no. >> my problem with president obama is alex, he does not negotiate with republicans. he doesn't bring the leadership up to talk to him. he doesn't make phone calls. >> does he do that with democrats? >> that is true. the republicans control one chamber of congress. my former boss brought democrats in all the time. we were able to forge for no child left behind. president obama has to recognize he is the president of the united states. not the president of the democratic party. he need

john mccain said earlier this is partly about benghazi but it's also about the simple fact that they don't like chuck hagel. they said they don't like him. mccain said you can disagree without being disagreeable and ha hagel is disz agreeable. >> they don't like him, but he was a republican senator. and they've smeared him. you would think this guy is somebody they didn't know. he was one of their own. a republican senator. listen to the thirngs they've been saying about him. >> we saw with his nomination, something truly extraordinary, which is the government to iran formally and publically, praising the desense secretary. that is unpres dented. >> i'd say he's endorsed by them. but you can't get any cozier than this. >> we do not know, for example, if he received compensation for giving paid speeches at extreme or radical groups. >> i mean, this is outrageous stuff here. is this a smear? or is this trying to weaken him so he can't do his job. >> i think it's all of the above. in that extension, you have a man who has two purple hearts for his service in vietnam. and, in that instan

so what john mccain said is very qualified. you put that on top of the fact that chuck hagel has said things over the past five, six, seven years that does place him outside the mainstream of american political thought when it comes to foreign policy. i think that's fair too. so i think that's what the senate is supposed to do. they're supposed to advise and consent. i think john mccain is doing it exactly like he should do it. he has problems with it, but he's going to let the president put his person in charge. i thought mccain was very fair there. mark? you take some of the things he said in the past, they're pretty bad, but he circled back. he's talked to lindsey. he's assured some other people that those are not his positions today. >> senator hagel has really big shoes to fill. the president's first two defense secretaries, fantastic. worked well with the hill, worked well with the pentagon. i think senator mccain, unlike some of the other critics that chuck hagel, has focused on the things where there really are question

that's what inspired john mccain, kelly, who is a critic of hagel's to come back to his defense against this freshman senator from texas who is raising the suggestion that he had taken money even from pyongyang or from iran. >> well, what's interesting about mccain's position here is that he has said very clearly that he does not believe that chuck hagel was the right choice in this instance. he believes his performance at his hearing was poor. he took real issue with his fellow republican ted cruz of texas and said that chuck hagel is an honorable man and wanted to defend him in this process. where it gets harder for mccain is that lindsey graham is perhaps his greatest ally in the senate, and he believes that there are legitimate questions about benghazi still to be answered. not so much looking at the past, although politically that's what they want to do. also trying to make sure that they understand what's going on with some of these issues as they may pertain to future hot spots. mccain is not jumping to the ted cruz bandwagon, but i would surmise that he wants to be protective of
